The 1140 grid is 12 column CSS framework under the monitor is perfect for a 1280 On smaller screens, it is fluid and adapts to the width of the browser. Scrap 1024! Design once in 1140 for 1280, and with very little extra work, it will adapt to work on almost any monitor, including mobile phones. Because it all percentages are based, the gutters are different in size.
But at full width of the grooves are about 40px wide. Photoshop template of the grid at 1140px also availble for download. It works perfectly in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, IE7 and IE8. It works fine in IE6. IE6 does not support max-width.
